PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Hydrogen Train From Jind

In a big moment for sustainable transportation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched India’s first hydrogen train on Friday, July 17, 2026. Flagged off from the Jind railway station in Haryana, this historic launch represents a critical pivot away from highly polluting diesel locomotives and firmly places India within an exclusive international cohort—joining nations like Germany, Japan, and China—that have successfully operationalized hydrogen rail technology.

India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Route & Details

The new train will service an 89-kilometre corridor connecting Jind and Sonipat, operating under the Northern Railway division. Designed and manufactured entirely within India by the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), the train is a testament to the “Make in India” initiative. What sets this specific model apart on the global stage is its massive scale.

While European hydrogen trains typically feature three to four coaches, the project introducing India first hydrogen train boasts ten passenger coaches powered by a 3,200-horsepower engine, making it one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains currently in operation worldwide.

What Makes India’s Hydrogen Train Revolutionary?

The underlying technology behind India’s first hydrogen-powered train is as revolutionary as its scale. The train utilizes advanced hydrogen fuel cells that mix compressed hydrogen gas with atmospheric oxygen. This electrochemical reaction generates the electricity needed to propel the train, emitting absolutely nothing but pure water vapour and heat as by-products. With zero carbon emissions, the train is equipped with a multi-layered safety apparatus, including highly sensitive flame, smoke, and hydrogen leak detectors.

What Is Hydrogen Train’s Ticket Price & Speed?

Operating at a cruising speed of 75 km/h—though designed to safely reach 110 km/h—the service can accommodate roughly 2,600 passengers daily. Furthermore, the government has ensured that this green transition remains accessible to the masses; ticket prices on this pilot route remain extraordinarily affordable, capping out at just Rs 25. Addressing the large gathering in Jind, PM Modi emphasized that while the 20th century belonged to electric trains, the 21st century will be entirely driven by hydrogen-powered mobility. As Indian Railways plans to roll out 35 more hydrogen trains across the country, this launch marks the official beginning of a nationwide green energy revolution on tracks.
