Bangkok Fire: What Happened? Survivors Describe Explosion and “Foam Rain”

According to survivor testimonies and preliminary investigations, the inferno began near the front stage shortly before midnight on July 12. A performing musician told authorities that thick smoke began billowing from a circuit breaker, followed immediately by a total power failure and a massive explosion.

The situation deteriorated within seconds as the fire ignited the venue’s sound-absorbing foam ceiling. Eyewitnesses reported flaming debris raining down on the panic-stricken crowd. With the front entrance blocked by a horizontal plume of fire, customers stampeded toward the back of the pub to locate the kitchen and bathrooms. Tragically, firefighters discovered many of the victims trapped inside the restrooms, unable to navigate the darkened, smoke-filled corridors.

Over 60 Hospitalized as PM Anutin Charnvirakul Arrives At Site

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived at the smoldering ruins early Monday morning to coordinate the massive rescue operation. Governor Sittipunt confirmed that at least 63 individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, with up to 22 victims suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation in critical condition. Forensic teams have set up emergency registration spots to help distraught relatives identify the bodies, as many victims were not carrying identification.

Safety Protocols and Blocked Exits Under Scrutiny

While firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, the shocking death toll has instantly renewed intense scrutiny over Thailand’s notorious nightlife safety standards. Officials said that despite the fire being extinguished, many died due to inhaling continuous smoke rather than dying from burn injuries.

Emergency workers noted that hindered escape routes and highly flammable acoustic materials played a fatal role in the tragedy. The Thai government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the pub’s fire safety compliance, licensing, and structural integrity.
